How to Make Natural Whitening Toothpaste

Whitening your teeth doesn’t have to mean using harsh chemicals or store-bought products filled with unknown ingredients. This natural whitening toothpaste recipe is gentle, effective, and safe for the whole family.

Natural Toothpaste

Make this Household Staple using 3 Ingredients

I’m here to tell you that yes, this three-ingredient alternative to your store-bought toothpaste can really do the trick! This recipe has been in my family since I was a kid and we have been running around with shiny white smiles ever since 🙂 I will tell you it can take some getting used to applying salty powder to your or your kids’ teeth, but when you see just how white your teeth become, you’ll settle in quickly! Our kids started using this when they were very young, so they are used to its texture. Every morning and every night we would wet our toothbrushes and dip them into our homemade toothpaste made from the exact same recipe I am sharing with you.

This natural substitute is made with simple, wholesome ingredients you can feel good about using daily. It feels so good to start filling our cabinets with jars of products that we made right in our own kitchen.

Why Make Your Own Toothpaste?

This recipe offers a safe and natural way to keep your teeth clean and bright. It’s easy to make, and leaves your mouth feeling fresh and healthy. Plus, it’s a sustainable choice that benefits your family and the environment.

  • Customizable: Adjust texture and flavor to suit your family’s preferences.
  • Eco-Friendly: Reduce waste by storing in reusable jars.
  • Affordable: Save money by using pantry staples.
  • Natural Ingredients: Free from artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives.

Salt: Salt’s mildly abrasive nature allows it to remove plaque quicker than your average toothpaste. Brushing your teeth with this mineral also helps strengthen your teeth and helps your smile with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Baking Soda: A natural whitener! Trust me, if you regularly brush with baking soda you will create a naturally whiter smile that lasts. Don’t be alarmed if you don’t wake up with instantly pearly teeth the next morning – good, sustainable changes take time.

Essential Oils: The cherry on top! We like the cooling taste of peppermint in our family or you can also go with brighter flavors like orange or lemon. As long as you are using a food-grade essential oil, you can’t go wrong!

  • 10-15 drops peppermint essential oil (optional, for a fresh flavor)

  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients:
    • In a small bowl, combine baking soda and sea salt. Stir until evenly mixed.
  2. Add Flavoring:
    • Mix in the peppermint essential oil for a refreshing taste, if desired.
  3. Store:
    • Transfer the toothpaste to an airtight glass jar or container. Store in a cool, dry place.

Dipping Toothbrush into Natural Toothpaste

Using Hydrogen Peroxide for Extra Whitening Strength

Every couple of times per week, we would wet our toothbrush with a few drips of peroxide, then dip our toothbrush into the mixture before brushing.

How to Use with Hydrogen Peroxide:

  1. Scoop a small amount of the toothpaste onto your toothbrush.
  2. Add a few drops (about 3-4) of hydrogen peroxide directly onto the paste.
  3. Brush as usual for 1-2 minutes, focusing on whitening problem areas.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Note: Hydrogen peroxide is a mild bleaching agent, so it can enhance whitening when used occasionally. Limit use with peroxide to 1-2 times per week to avoid overexposure, which could cause sensitivity. This has worked especially well for our kids who are wearing braces to keep their teeth white and shiny. Always consult with a dentist if unsure about its suitability for your oral care.

Customizing your Toothpaste

Feel free to take the reins so you can make this something you and your family truly love and enjoy using!

Essential Oil Scents

Just as you might pick out different flavors and looks in the store, you can do the same with this homemade recipe. I know all of us don’t pick out the same fluoride at the dentist!

We enjoy the classic peppermint but you can also use lemon, orange, spearmint, or lime oils. These are just some of the many food-grade essential oils you can choose from.

Using Coconut Oil:

Want to make the switch to natural toothpaste but the texture is throwing you off? You can also mix in coconut oil for added benefits and a smoother texture.
