Creamy, savory, and a flavor that takes you right back to childhood

Sunny days, Grandma’s warm voice welcoming us into the kitchen, hands of siblings fighting over her fresh jar of bread and butter pickles – these moments are what treasured memories are made of.
Growing up, every visit to my grandparents’ house was an invitation to sample whatever fresh snack was waiting for us on the counter. Sometimes it was jam and bread, sometimes it was hand-picked veggies from the garden, and a lot of the time it was homemade bread and butter pickles.

There’s a unique excitement that comes from a meal that takes a few days to taste just right. Waiting while the cucumbers soak in mustard seed, celery seed, turmeric, alum, sugar, and vinegar, these bread and butter pickles offer the tastiest form of delayed gratification.
Taking inspiration from my Creamy Ranch Pasta Salad, I wondered if I could combine the rich, cheesy ranch flavors with the sweetness of bread and butter pickles to make a dip. After some experimenting, I found that it only takes a few simple ingredients to make a uniquely sweet and savory pickle dip! One that will pack well in field meal boxes and I anticipate being a crowd pleaser at our summer get togethers that are on the horizon.

Optional:

Yes, you’ll just need to soften up the cream cheese first and use a hand whisk for a few minutes longer to get the same texture.
When I initially made the pickle dip I had the family try it with ruffled chips but I’ve since found that I really love the savory flavor as a substitute for mayo on my sandwiches!
I have seen this done before, and as if this dish couldn’t get any more midwestern, I’d urge you to give it a try 🙂
Making homemade pickles was not a family tradition I was going to let slip through the cracks! We’ve been making bread and butter pickles and our other favorite – refrigerator pickles – a regular snack in our house during the gardening months. Since these refrigerator pickles are dill-based I’m curious about what a dip with them would look like – possibly adding spicier additions like jalapenos or green onions. What new dips are you trying this year? I’m interested to hear!
