Homemade Tallow Sugar Scrub | Natural Winter Skincare

A reminder that as we reach the heart of winter, your skin deserves care and attention too

Lavender Lemon Tallow Sugar Scrub

Sugar Scrub with Tallow

I have yet to find a skin protector as effective and soothing as rendered tallow, especially when used as a healer during wintertime. And when I find something that works, I run with it.

Tallow has made it’s way into our body wash, whipped tallow balm, sunscreen, lip balm, and now hand scrub. It’s natural, versatile, and so beneficial for your skin.

This lavender lemon hand scrub invites your senses, asking you to take a deep breath and give your skin the attention it deserves.

What are the skin benefits of Tallow Sugar Scrub?

Tallow

Tallow is rendered animal fat (we get ours from cows) that provides vitamin-rich, breathable protection for your skin. It’s soft, soothing, and penetrates your skin with natural oils. I love using it because its natural benefits allow me to go through my day without worrying about my skin. I discuss more benefits here.

Sugar

Sugar is what provides the natural exfoliation of dead skin cells, smoothing your skin and prepping it for moisturization. The truth is, lotion and tallow balm alone can only go so far if your hands aren’t primed to be moisturized. The sugar’s gentle exfoliation is what differentiates this scrub from any other skincare product.

Oil

Jojoba oil, olive oil, or whichever carrier oil you choose to use helps bind this scrub together and locks in the moisture. You can find jojoba oil here

Lemon

The lemon zest provides a bright, aromatic quality with a bit of extra exfoliation and vitamin C

Lavender Essential Oil

Beyond its calming scent, lavender is also known to help with inflammation and healing of scrapes and minor cuts that are especially prevalent this time of year.

Tips for using natural hand scrub

  • Patch test on skin before using: While these ingredients are meant to be exfoliating and healing, sometimes sensitivity can sneak up on us, especially when our hands are already dry. Take the time to test it out first!
  • Add soap: Adding soap will turn this into “gardener’s” hand scrub. A scrub that is both exfoliating and cleansing after long days working outside. I recommend Castile soap for this variation.
  • Store next to your sink: A nice reminder to scrub when you wash your hands!
  • Play around with the ratio: You can absolutely add more sugar or more oil, depending on the type of feel you like from your scrub
  • Moisturize after: I like to double down on hydration by applying lotion after exfoliating

Questions about this Lemon Lavender Hand Scrub

How often should I use hand scrub?

Up to 4 times a week, especially when the weather gets harsh. I like exfoliating after I wash my hands or right before the shower.

Can I use this tallow sugar scrub all over my body?

Yes – this can act as a whole body scrub before or after body wash.

Can I use coconut oil in this recipe?

Coconut oil is made up of mostly saturated fats, meaning it’s similar to tallow in structure and feel. Because of this, I recommend against it in this recipe, but it would be a good substitution for the tallow.

How much lemon zest should I use in my hand scrub?

It’s really up to you – I like adding quite a bit for the extra exfoliating properties

Which essential oils should I use in my hand scrub?

I find Doterra to be the highest quality – and with their wide selection, these oils last!

Closing thoughts + other additions I’m curious about

Used a few times a week, this scrub will gently smooth your hands and protect them throughout the winter. The natural ingredients and aromatherapy from this tallow scrub is a guiding step towards healthy skin during these cold months.

In the future, I’d like to look at adding natural herbs from the garden, like my dried yarrow, and discovering how this could enhance the healing effects of a hand scrub. I also have combinations with my favorite essential oils that we use in the sauna (here) and would work well in this scrub. Maybe orange and vanilla next? Let me know your favorite scent combinations.
