Inside my Closet | Functional and Farm Friendly Clothing

Wool Overalls

Calling all my women farmers, ranchers, and those whose lifestyles mean they clock in for the day in their work boots. When working through every season we have to adapt, and so does our wardrobe.

Filling my closet with Practical Items

Take a peek at my socials and you’ll see my wardrobe change as each new season comes and goes. Whether it’s working inside the garage in February or spending all day in my flower bed in June, my clothes need to be functional and long-lasting (and I appreciate when they can be fashionable as well!).

I prioritize purchasing durable clothes that move with me through every new day and every new project (like my newly built chicken coop). Having durable clothes reminds me that if my clothes can stand up to the challenges of the day, I can too.

Wardrobe Checklist

What I look for when purchasing clothes

  • Fabric: Choosing your wardrobe for each season also means considering what fabric you are putting on. I look for breathable cotton and linen in the summer and thicker wool and fleece in the winter.
  • Layering: Working outside in Minnesota weather means I expect to be adding or removing clothing as the day goes on. If I need to add a layer, does the size I’m choosing have wiggle room? Will I still be protected from the sun and other elements if I remove layers?
  • Second Hand: If I can find it second-hand, I will always choose this option first. This keeps more fabric out of the landfill. Plus for as fast as trends come and go, it’s a way less expensive option. Our family has come to choose second-hand over quick fashion. My favorite-always-asked about Vintage Wranglers are the most popular! I actually have 2 pair, the first were my mom’s in the 70’s and the second, I found for $1 at a garage sale!
  • Choosing quality over a cheaper price tag: When I do choose to buy new, and it comes to the tough, hard-working pieces in my capsule closet, I’ve made it a practice not to trade quality for a cheaper price tag because, for me, peace of mind means buying a clothing item I know I can trust for years to come. These are pieces that will last through the trends and the tough lifestyle. Knowing that I can slip on functional clothes that will allow me to meet the day’s demands is always worth the investment.

A Few of my Faves

Flag and Anthem Flannel

My favorite flannels are from Flag and Anthem! They allow for the perfect range of motion and meet my “layering ability” criteria. They provide soft, quality coverage while also being reasonably priced – what’s not to love!

Durable Flannel

Cotton-Linen Romper

This is by far the clothing item I get the most questions about and you can find me comfortably sporting this cotton-linen romper anytime the weather allows me to. I have it in several different colors now. It’s breathable, which allows me to work hard in the summer without feeling restricted. Scroll down to find it in my Amazon Storefront!

Sauna-Wear

I view my time in the sauna as a ritual – a time to reset, relax, and rejuvenate which is why I like to wear items that not only enhance my experience but get me into the right mindset. Here are my go-to’s

Black Sauna Swim Suite, Wool indoor/ outdoor Booties, Wool Sauna Hat, Turkish Robe

Pants and Overalls from Dickies

When I think of work pants and apparel, items that truly last, I think of Dickies. Their American-made brand specializes in high-quality work gear, and you can find at least one Dickies item in every family member’s closet!

Anything WOOL!

Take these slow-fashion, handmade rustic deadstock Wool Bibs from RevivALL Clothing, made in Montana! These are so warm and just get better every winter! I love them just about as much as I love the story of how these clothes come to be, with sustainability in mind. Use the code: ‘Emily’ for 10% off.

This sweater was a gift from a dear friend of mine who knitted it using her teeswater wool yarn. It’s the coziest thing ever!

Foot wear

Consistently spending full days on my feet has allowed me to quickly narrow down the shoes that leave me feeling like I can still stand at the end of the day!

Blundstones: My go-to work boots, they are comfortable, warm, durable, and ready to move with me in any season.

Chacos: The tan lines are worth it! Any time I have the chance to wear a breathable shoe, I’ll take it and these sandals do the trick.

Grounding Shoes (use code HeartySol for $10 off): Shoes I can benefit from just by slipping them on! Grounding means allowing the natural energy transfer from the ground into your body – this isn’t just a phase, it’s a proven way to aid in muscle recovery, focus, and overall movement throughout your day.

Amazon Storefront

My Amazon Storefront is the best reference I can give you into the products I use and love. When I find a reliable baking tool, beauty product, or bedroom essential, I make sure to add it to my storefront so you too can share in these products!

HeartySol Shop

Taking my homemade products, setting them in the mail, and letting them make their way to your homes is such a rewarding experience. For apparel, you will find winter and specially made sauna hats, but beyond that, you can find handmade and homegrown products that I use daily and want to share with you!

How I customize my closet

For when I’m feeling like my clothes need a little extra touch, or when fabric is the perfect carrier for my newest inspiration.

  • Cyanotype: I am constantly inspired by the natural foliage and animal feathers that float around our farm, waiting to be picked up and used in a project like cyanotype. Wearing the intricate designs is a new level of connection and appreciation of the nature around us and I love to elevate my denim with this natural sun-bleached design.
  • Sewing: Never underestimate the power of a needle and thread! Pull out your sewing kit, whether it’s a fix after a torn piece of apparel, indicative of a long work day, or an itch to add something to enhance the look of a particular item!
  • Homemade Laundry Detergent and Whitener: Our clothes can’t keep working for us if they aren’t cleaned and cared for properly. My natural detergent and whitener have become staples in our household and make sure our clothes are as ready to take on the day as we are.
