Baking the Best Matcha White Chocolate Chip Cookies
Allow me to expand your dessert horizons and introduce you to these delicious Matcha White Chocolate Chip Cookies!
A Fresh Spin on your Favorite Cookies!
Not just for tea or lattes! In Japanese culture, the practice of consuming Matcha is routine and represents mental clarity, harmony, and hospitality, so we’ve taken a page from their book and have began to experiment with matcha in our recipes!
This recipe uses all of your basic cookie ingredients with the addition of matcha powder! Adding matcha to your desserts creates a fresh, earthy taste that pairs so well with the sweet white chocolate chips in these cookies!
Why You’ll love using Matcha in your Desserts!
Natural Vibrant Coloring: You can thank your farmers for this one! When growing tea leaves, they will shade the plants which is what gives matcha it’s deep green color. This makes for a naturally fun and themed dessert!
Benefits of Green Tea: Yes, desserts do lose some of the nutrients when baked, but I’ll take any added health benefits where I can get them! Matcha is a great source of antioxidants (catechins, specifically) that is beneficial for both brain and body function.
A Light and Fresh Dessert: Once it reaches springtime, we generally try to reach for lighter, fresher desserts. Matcha does exactly this, offering an earthiness to any dessert it’s paired with.
Making Matcha White Chocolate Chip Cookies
Yield: 20-22 cookies
Ingredients
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons Matcha powder
1 ½ stick unsalted butter room temperature (¾ cup)
¾ cup white sugar
½ cup light brown sugar
1 whole large egg + 1 yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 to 1 ½ cup white chocolate chips
Step-By-Step Instructions
In a small bowl, whisk together all purpose flour, baking soda, salt, cornstarch, and matcha powder.
In a mixing bowl, add the room temperature butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. Beat for about a minute or two until light and fluffy using a hand mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment.
Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla extract. Beat again until smooth. Scrape the sides of the bowl as necessary.
Add the dry to the wet and combine until a dough forms.
Mix in the white chocolate chips and let the dough rest for 20 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
Scoop out portions of the dough about the size of 1/4 to 1/3 measuring cup. Make sure to space them apart, 6 cookies per sheet.
Pop in the oven to bake for about 11 to 12 minutes until the edges are golden and the center is still a bit soft. The cookies will continue baking out of the oven on the hot pan.
Leave them on the pan for about 10 minutes or until firm before transferring them to a cooling rack to finish cooling. Enjoy!
*Pro-tip: sift your matcha powder into the bowl for the best flavor integration
Questions about these Chewy Matcha Cookies
How do I adjust the matcha intensity?
I have found that 2 tbsp of matcha powder provides a balanced flavor, but feel free to adjust the ratio to your liking:
Lighter flavor: 1 tsp
More intense flavor: 3 tsp
Where can I buy matcha powder?
I use any kind of storebought matcha powder – this brand is “culinary grade” which gives a deeper matcha flavor. The alternative is “commercial grade.”
What are the best matcha flavor combinations?
I recently saw matcha cheesecake come across my screen, so seriously, the combinations are endless! You can pair matcha with vanilla and caramel flavors for a sweeter, richer dessert or you can pair it with other light natural flavors like strawberry or pineapple. The depth of flavor that matcha adds makes it a unique addition to any dessert!
